Cherry is a very warm wood that will darken a bit as it gets more seasoned. As your cherry wood cutting board or butcher block becomes richer in color, you can also expect your board to strengthen likewise. In fact, cherry wood is well-known for self-healing and becoming even stronger and more durable with age.
Considering the fact that cherry wood is one of the stronger woods on the market already with a Janka hardness rating between 950 lbf (4,200 N) and 995 lbf (4,430 N) depending on whether it is black cherry or Brazilian cherry, it’s highly enticing that this wood only gets better with age.
Cherry wood’s self-healing properties also make it specifically useful for cutting boards as a highly common cause of foodborne illness in the kitchen is food trapped in the grooves of the cutting board. With other cutting boards on the market, deep grooves made by the knife cause pockets where uncooked food can be trapped and infect all other food it comes in contact with. However, with a cherry cutting board, this issue is no longer one to be concerned about in the kitchen at all.
To top it off, cherry wood is highly sustainable and does not absorb water like other woods making it a great option for the kitchen. Cherry cutting boards do not warp or crack from water damage and, while we don’t recommend putting your board in the dishwasher, the cleaning process is simple and is sure to lead to a long-lasting and beautiful cutting board guaranteed.
All dimensions are approximate sizes. It is best to work with the natural characteristics of the wood first and the dimensions second. To learn more about our cherry wood cutting boards, check out our cherry wood cutting board breakdown today.
