cutting board comparison

This 12×16 walnut wood cutting board is a great size for a smaller kitchen with smaller countertops. It has the perfect balance of function and style with 2” thickness and all the visual appeal and durability of walnut wood’s fine grain pattern. The neutral tone and many positive qualities of this material is why it is a perfect choice for professional chefs and home cooks alike.

The swirling wood grain and warm tone of walnut wood means that it is visually appealing, great for decor use, and able to withstand daily use without bending, warping, cracking, chipping, or drying out at all. According to Designing Buildings Wiki, “In addition, walnut wood can be used for flooring, solid wood or veneer for musical instruments and furniture, and interior decoration. Black Walnut is typically used for turned items, furniture, interior panelling, and cabinetry. English Walnut can also be used for furniture, small wooden objects, and veneer.”

On the Janka hardness scale, Walnut ranks 1,010 lbf or 1,010 Janka. With this said, it is harder than cherry wood but not quite as hard as maple wood. If you are looking for a board with even more rigidity, our maple wood boards are sure to take the cake. However, the main benefits of walnut wood come in its shock absorbency and self healing even more than its immense strength. Walnut has the ability to heal damage it sustains over time.

This ability is particularly beneficial for cutting boards and butcher blocks because it means that the deep grooves made in your board from daily use with your various cutting knives will repair itself. With cheaper wood and plastic boards, these grooves quickly become an issue as they trap food particles and contaminate food leading to foodborne illness and food poisoning. With self healing wood, however, this concern is no longer necessary in the slightest. This also increases the lifespan of your cutting board as well.

Another benefit to walnut wood is its sustainability. Because walnut wood can be easily grown in countless states, it is cost-effective not only to produce but to purchase as well. This means that walnut wood isn’t just durable and beautiful but cost-effective and eco-friendly as well.

All dimensions are approximate sizes. It is best to work with the natural characteristics of the wood first and the dimensions second.
