cutting board comparison

This 20×24 walnut wood butcher block is a great size for a smaller kitchen with smaller countertops. With a 2” thickness and the incredible durability and longevity that comes with it, we have found that these end grain butcher blocks have the perfect balance of function and style.

Walnut’s swirling fine grain pattern makes it not only beautiful but incredibly sturdy as well. Walnut even keeps your knife stable as it cuts with the direction of the wood fibers. That is why this wood is used most commonly for cabinetry, countertops, veneers, car interiors, guitar bodies, gun stocks, hardwood flooring, furniture, construction, and countless other projects including art and handmade items.

On the Janka hardness scale, Walnut ranks 1,010 lbf or 1,010 Janka. With this said, it is harder than cherry wood but not quite as hard as maple wood. Walnut also continues to get even more dense and durable with age as well as it is one of the woods that continues to harden after it is manufactured. This is why it is capable of daily use and potential water or fall damage without breaking, snapping, chipping, cracking, drying out, or warping along the way.

Walnut wood also has self healing properties that make it incredibly beneficial when used for cutting boards and butcher blocks specifically. With lower quality wood, plastic, or marble boards, deep grooves gradually form on the surface of the board which trap food particles and contaminate food leading to foodborne illness and food poisoning. However, with walnut wood, these grooves repair themselves which means this issue no longer is something to be concerned about with this far safer material.

On top of its beauty and strength, walnut wood is also incredibly eco-friendly and cost-effective as well. Walnut wood can be grown nearly anywhere with little overhead cost or damage to the environment surrounding and can even be used in place of less sustainable woods. Its ease of growth makes it cheaper than other woods of the same caliber as well. This is why it is perfect for butcher blocks as it is beautiful, cost-effective, durable, and incredibly long lasting likewise. This particular board with the end grain build will last forever.

All dimensions are approximate sizes. It is best to work with the natural characteristics of the wood first and the dimensions second.
