What Is a Cherry Wood Edge Grain Cutting Board?

A cherry edge grain cutting board is constructed by gluing wood strips together so the long edges — rather than the ends — face up to form the cutting surface. The result is a strong, stable board with a beautifully uniform stripe pattern running the length of the wood.

Edge grain construction is the sweet spot between end grain and face grain boards. It’s more forgiving on knife edges than face grain boards, more resistant to deep scoring than end grain, and significantly more affordable to produce without cutting corners on quality. For everyday prep work — chopping vegetables, slicing bread, breaking down proteins — a cherry edge grain board delivers the performance professional and home cooks actually need.

Watch Our Cutting Board Building Process

Built to Outlast the Competition

The edge grain construction of our cherry cutting boards arranges wood fibers along the length of the board, creating a surface that handles the mechanical stress of daily chopping without breaking down. This fiber orientation resists splitting, cracking, and warping — three of the most common failure points in thinner or poorly glued boards.

At nearly 2 inches thick, our cherry boards have the mass to stay flat over years of use. Thin boards warp. Ours don’t. Combined with our waterproof adhesive and precise milling, you get a board that maintains a dead-flat surface meal after meal, year after year.

Gentle on Your Knives, Tough on the Task

Cherry’s moderate hardness makes it one of the best woods for knife preservation. The wood fibers compress slightly under the blade rather than fighting back against it, which reduces micro-abrasion on the cutting edge. Chefs who switch to cherry wood often notice their knives stay sharper longer between sharpenings.

The smooth, even surface our edge grain construction creates also means your knife tracks cleanly and predictably — no rough patches, raised fibers, or warped spots to fight against. Whether you’re fine-dicing shallots or breaking down a whole chicken, the surface performs consistently.

A Cutting Board That Looks as Good as It Performs

Cherry wood is a natural focal point in any kitchen. The warm reddish-brown tones pair beautifully with both modern stainless-steel kitchens and traditional wood cabinetry. The edge grain stripe pattern is clean and graphic without being busy — sophisticated enough to double as a charcuterie board or serving platter when guests arrive.

Over time, cherry deepens in color through a natural oxidation process called photochemical darkening. What starts as a light, slightly rosy wood gradually transforms into a deeper, richer amber tone. Every board ages into something uniquely its own.

Protect Your Investment

Our board butter is a great way to keep your cutting board in great condition for years; and is also 100% food-safe.

Why Cherry Wood?

Cherry is one of North America’s premier domestic hardwoods, and for good reason:

  • Natural hardness: American black cherry (Prunus serotina) rates around 950 on the Janka hardness scale — hard enough to resist deep knife marks, but soft enough that it won’t dull your blades the way maple can over time.
  • Self-healing surface: Cherry’s tight, closed grain means minor knife scratches are less visible than on lighter woods, and the surface stays looking cleaner longer.
  • Ages beautifully: Unlike lighter hardwoods that can yellow or gray, cherry wood deepens to a rich amber-mahogany patina over time. Your board actually gets more beautiful with age.
  • Food safe: Cherry wood’s fine, closed grain is naturally resistant to moisture penetration, making it a hygienic choice for food contact surfaces when properly maintained.
  • Distinctly American: Cherry is native to the eastern United States. Choosing cherry means supporting domestic hardwood suppliers and sustainable forestry.

Our Process Made Simple

Every cherry edge grain cutting board in our lineup is designed, milled, assembled, and finished at our shop in Nampa, Idaho. We source cherry hardwood from trusted domestic suppliers and select each board for grain quality, stability, and dimensional consistency before it ever reaches the glue-up stage.

We don’t batch-produce boards and warehouse them. Your board is built to order, which means it’s fresh, properly acclimated, and finished at peak condition when it ships. Standard turnaround is 12–15 business days during non-peak periods. The wait is worth it — you’re getting a board built specifically for you, not pulled off a shelf.

Step 1. Place Your Order

Your journey begins when you place an order through our website. Each order is treated as a made-to-order piece, not a mass-produced item pulled from a warehouse shelf.

Step 2. Wood Selection

The foundation of a great cutting board is the wood itself. We only work with hardwoods known for durability, stability, and food safety. We source our lumber locally from trusted suppliers where we hand-select our lumber.

Step 3. Milling & Assembly

We mill and prepare your wood for assembly. We plane each piece to exact thickness, aligning grain direction to reduce future movement & arranging strips for both strength and visual balance. Boards are then glued and clamped under controlled pressure to ensure strength.

Step 4. Sanding & Detailing

After assembly, each board is shaped and refined. We don’t rush sanding. Each board is progressively sanded to eliminate tool marks, soften edges, and create a surface that feels just as good as it looks.

Step 5. Custom Engraving

If your board includes engraving, this step is handled with exceptional care. Every engraving design is double-checked before cutting. Once engraved, the board is lightly sanded again to remove any raised fibers while preserving crisp detail.

Step 6. Sealing & Conditioning

Proper sealing is critical to a cutting board’s lifespan. We never use shortcuts or surface-only finishes. Our boards are conditioned multiple times to ensure long-term protection right out of the box.

Step 7. Inspection & Packaging

Before packaging, every cutting board undergoes a final hands-on inspection. Once approved, your board is packaged specifically for safe shipping.

Step 8. Shipped To You

Each finished order is carefully packaged and shipped to you with free ground (UPS or FedEx) shipping in the lower 48 states.

Easy to Maintain

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity of any cutting board. Edge grain boards are relatively easy to clean and maintain. Regular oiling with food-grade mineral oil helps nourish the wood and protect it from moisture, preventing cracks and warping. This low-maintenance aspect makes edge grain cutting boards a practical choice for busy kitchens where convenience is paramount.
