wood cutting boards

There’s nothing quite like a wood cutting board for setting a kitchen apart. In terms of functionality and aesthetics, wood speaks to confidence and style.

Our cutting boards and butcher blocks are built up to 2 inches thick and handcrafted in the United States. If you’re looking for a new cutting board, there are a lot of reasons to go with wood.

Why go with wood over plastic?

If cared for properly, wood is as safe as rubber or plastic cutting boards and can last a long time. The durability of the woods we choose for our cutting boards means our boards don’t scratch easily and can endure the occasional fall if dropped.

Wood is also friendly to your kitchen knives whereas plastic can dull your knives.

And whether you like a dark walnut finish, a light maple, or a rich cherry color, our cutting boards look great and work as well on display as they do under the knife.

Types of Boards

We offer two different types of boards: cutting boards and butcher blocks. Our cutting boards utilize the face grain of the wood which is why they are put together with longer strips grain.

Our butcher blocks are made with the end grain of the wood and are ideal for cutting raw meat. Our blocks are suited for professional use and can endure a lot of cutting with minimal scratching.

Types of Wood

When choosing a new cutting board, you’ll want to consider what kind of wood to use. Our standard butcher blocks and cutting boards are made from three different kinds of wood, each with their own characteristics and appeals. We offer cherry, maple and walnut.

We chose these woods because they all score high in durability, versatility, color, and natural luster. We also choose wood from an eco-conscious point of view. We use wood that is plentiful and is aggressively regrown.

When you browse our boards by wood type, you’ll discover that we have a lot of information about each wood, it’s general uses, where it comes from, and its strengths and weaknesses. Here are some highlights.

Cherry Wood

Cherry is on the softer end of the woods that we offer, but it has a uniform grain and is not very porous, so it is resistant to rot and decay and it doesn’t retain bacteria causing liquids.

Our cherry wood boards age well, becoming stronger and lasting a long time. They also tend to darken over time, taking on a rich color. Cherry wood is aromatic and one of the most beautiful woods available. That’s why it is often used to make furniture and can give a luxurious sense of style to everything from jewelry to car dashboards.

A cherry wood cutting board can easily be a visual as well as functional focal point for a kitchen.

Maple Wood

This plentiful wood has a light color and light grain variation. This means maple wood may not stand out visually like cherry wood does, but it can complement light and open kitchens, especially since many cabinets are made with maple wood.

Maple can come in both hardwood and softwood forms, which makes it a versatile wood, and maple’s sapwood is used more often than its heartwood (unlike cherry and walnut). It is a durable, structurally sound wood that is able to withstand warping and scratching.

Walnut Wood

This darkly colored wood super-star has a straight grain and a density that doesn’t easily allow for breaking or bending due to knots or swirls.

Marking a middle ground between cherry (on the softer side) and maple (and the harder side) walnut’s density makes it a heavy wood, but for cutting boards or blocks, it’s an ideal attribute to have since it will withstand drops and be hard to wear down.

Contrary to cherry, walnut will actually grow lighter as it grows older, revealing more of its grain when it does.

The Size That’s Right for You

We offer a variety of standard sizes for both our cutting boards and butcher blocks. Sizes can vary depending on the wood and whether it is butcher block or cutting. But in general, if you want something as small as 10×12 inches or as large as 20×36 inches or something that’s in between, we’ve got you covered.

On the 10 to 20 inch sides we offer standard variations of 12, 14, 16, and 18 inches. On the 12 to 36 inch sides we are standard variations of 14, 16, 20, 24, and 30 inches.

The Addons That Are Right For You

When you browse our standard offering of cutting boards and butcher blocks, you’ll discover that wood type and size of the board are not the only choices you’re given. We want you to have the board that will fit your needs, so we give each board a list of add-ons that you can choose from so that you know you are getting what is just right for you.

For each of our boards you can choose to add a hang hole if space is limited and you need your board to be on the wall. You can have juice grooves to keep meat or fruit juices from running onto the counter.

We also offer to install routed handles on the end of the board for easier manipulation and stability when you’re cutting. Speaking of stability, some people like having rubber feet added to the bottom of the board to keep it from sliding on the countertop while you’re cutting.

You can also choose to add a 4 ounce can of board butter that will help with maintaining your new cutting board or butcher block, because we recognize that maintenance is the key to your board’s long life.

It is our signature, food-safe finish that you can apply every six months, or whenever you feel your board is getting dry.

Finally, you can choose to add a special engraving, which makes an ideal touch for a gift. We can engrave initials, a picture or graphic, or a message.

Because of the way different woods react to engraving, you can contact us, and we will help you figure out the best wood for the kind of engraving that you want.
